ABSTRACT:An invar alloy on the basis of iron is formed byan intermetallic compound having a cubic crystal struc-ture of the NaZnl3 type having a nominal compositionLa(Fe,Co,X)13, wherein X is Si or A1. By subjecting thepresent intermetallic compound after melting to a temper-ing treatment at 800-1,000°C and coolinq it in an accel-arated manner, a brittle material is obtained which canbe ground to form a powder. From this powder, articleshaving any desired (optionally complicated) shape can beproduced by means of powder metallurgy. By mixing powdersof two different intermetallic compounds, a material canbe obtained having a substantially negligible coefficientof linear thermal expansion in the temperature range from0°C to 200 C.
