Abstract of the DisclosureThere is disclosed a method and an apparatus forautomatic quantitative measurement of textures by imageanalysis for measuring textures of a material containingvarious optically anisotropic textures. An image of thematerial is divided into a plurality of sections andbrightness of each section is classified into a pluralityof stages to be stored as gray levels of the sectionsor pixels. Image patterns of the textures are recognizedon the basis of gray level variations observed before andafter a mask movement, and the textures of the materialare determined according to predetermined criteria.
