The system units generateerror reports in response to the detection of errorconditions. When an error report is received, an initiallist is generated containing probable fault weights foreach of the system units based on the type of the errorreport. The probable fault weights are prespecified basedon a logical analysis of the fault modes and errorpropagation paths in the system. A history list of faultweights is first aged and then combined with the initiallist to generate a resultant list. The resultant listbecomes the new history list. The resultant list is thenmasked by the initial list to form a selection list fromwhich a most probable fault unit is selected.
