METHOD OF PRODUCTION OF LIGHTWEIGHTAGGREGATES, CEMENT AND CEMENTITIOUSADMIXTURES UTILIZING OIL SANDS SLUDGEAbstractA method of production of lightweight aggre-gates, cement and cementitious admixtures from the wastesludge produced in the oil sands oil recovery process orother similar bituminous waste sludges, such as thoseproduced in in situ heavy oil production and tar sandstailings ponds, is disclosed. The method involves sepa-rating the primary tailings and filtering the secondarytailings utilizing ash from the combustion of the sludgeto add to the filter cake. A secondary carbonaceousfuel may be added to the mixture which is dried, pellet-ized and sintered to produce the lightweight aggregate.The dried sludge/fuel mixture may be combusted to pro-duce ash for use in cement products or to utilize in thefiltration process. Where limestone is added to thesludge, the mixture is suitable for converting to cementusing a synthetic cement process.
