A sintered ceramic characterised in that it comprises aluminium titanate and mullite as the predominant crystal phases, it exhibits grain boundary and intracrystalline microcracking, high refractoriness, excellent thermal shock resistance, a coefficient ofthermal expansion (R.T. -1000°C) of less than 25 x 10 7/°C when sintered at temperatures of 1400°C and higher, a modulus of rupture of greater than 2500 psi (1.7 x 107 Pa; 175 kg/sq cm) when sintered at 1400°C and greater than 5000 psi (3.4 x 107 Pa; 351 kg/sq cm) when sintered at 1500°C and it comprises (in terms of weight percent) from 60 to 75% Al2O3, from 15 to 35% TiO2 and from 1 to 16.5% SiO2 is disclosed.;Referring to the accompanying drawing, the present base compositions are encompassed within the area I, J, K, L, M, I.
