The invention relates to a complex and coordination salts and their enantiomers obtained by optical resolution, having the formula (R) 3 --- M, wherein R comprises 1,10-phenanthroline or a substituted derivative thereof , M comprises a suitable transition metal, for example ruthenium (II) or cobalt (III), and R is bound to M by a coordinate bond. These complexes are useful in methods of labeling, nick and DNA cleavage. The lambda enantiomer of these compounds is useful in methods of labeling, detection, notch and specific Z-DNA scission. These compounds may also be used in a method of destruction of tumor cells, and can be combined with a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient to form a pharmaceutical composition for tumor cell treatment in a patient. The invention further relates to treating a patient having processes of tumor cells.
