A regulated chopped DC power supply comprising an alternator equipped with a stator and a rotor, the alternator having a three-phase winding to produce a high voltage output (0/1, 0/2, 0/3) and a three-phase winding connected in a star to provide a low voltage. Control means (14) for switching the connected rectifier (12) or the high voltage output (0/1, 0/2, 0/3) of the alternator to produce a chopped DC output (52) with regulation to supply electrical appliances. The regulation means (15) can operate according to two modes, the automobile mode, where the rectified low voltage output (B +) is connected to a battery (124) for charging said battery and initiating the excitation winding of the alternator. (134) at battery voltage, and power mode, where the battery (124) is disconnected from the rectified low voltage output (B +), and the excitation winding (134) is initiated from point d star (N) of the low voltage winding of the alternator, this excitation being used to increase the power output (B +) for use in welding, etc.
