A process for preparing a catalyst component supported on a carrier comprises contacting a titanium tetrahalide in the liquid or gaseous phase with a solid in the absence of mechanical pulverisation, the solid being obtained by (1) contacting a magnesium component selected from magnesium halides and their adducts with monocyclic aromatic monocarboxylic acid esters with a monocyclic aromatic monocarboxylic acid ester by mechanical pulverisation, or (2) contacting said magnesium component and ester with a titanium component selected from titantium cpds. of formula (I): Ti(OR)nX4-n (I) where R is an alkyl radical, X is a halogen atom and n is an integer of 0 to 4, and their complexes with monocyclic aromatic monocarboxylic acid esters by mechanical pulverisation.
