Installed in the air suction line and in the exhaust line are stacks 5 and 27 of flame arresting plates, between which an exhaust-gas heat exchanger 18 and a water-cooled exhaust pipe and manifold 9, 17 are connected in series and are supplied with cooling water by a pump 12 from part of a radiator 13 for the engine cooling water. A flap 8 in the air suction line is closed in response to an excessive temperature of exhaust gas at a sensor 23. Downstream of stack 27 the exhaust gas is mixed with air in an ejector unit 28. IMAGE
