Soot afterburner for diesel engines having a catalyst which is provided with an active metal oxide coating on a porous oxide support material, the metal oxide coating containing lanthanum and cobalt as active metal components, the coating being formed by impregnation of the support body with a solution of lanthanum salts and cobalt salts which are readily thermally degradable and subsequent firing and the metal coating contains 1 part of cobalt and 1-3 parts, preferably 2 parts, of lanthanum, and - based on the sum of these materials - 2 to 20% by mass of cerium and a cyclone-shaped annular chamber having side inlet or outlet ports, in which a 90 DEG deflection of the gas stream is carried out in each case, is connected upstream or downstream of each axial-flow catalyst in the form of a honeycomb body or a multiplicity of sequentially arranged plates.
