In the main application P 3519681.5, a description is given of sulphite formed in wet flue gas purification being oxidized to sulphate using sulphuric acid with a supply of oxidation air. In a further development of the teaching of the main application, according to the invention it is proposed that, in place of oxidation air (9), crude gas is added to the scrubbing liquid in the vessel (10) to liberate SO2 and reduce iron(III) to iron(II), at the same time an exhaust gas line (28) from the vessel (10) to the crude gas line (29) being attached.
