The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of halogen-substituted benzoylacetonitriles of the formula IMAGE in which X1 and X2 are identical or different and represent hydrogen or halogen and X3 represents halogen, which is characterised in that 1-chloroacetophenone of the formula (II) IMAGE in which X1, X2 and X3 have the abovementioned meanings, are reacted with water-soluble alkali metal cyanides in the presence of diluents and the mixture is subsequently acidified with a mineral acid, and to 1-chloro-2-(2,4-dichloro-5-fluorophenyl)ethan-2-one, which is novel, and to a process for its preparation.
