The process entails the precipitated calcium carbonate being redissolved by introducing water and gas containing carbon dioxide and being discharged with the purified waste water. The redissolving is preferably carried out in a separate gas scrubbing stage which is downstream of the anaerobic stage and through which the sludge/water suspension passes. The anaerobic sludge to be recycled and the water containing calcium bicarbonate are separated in a subsequent separation stage. IMAGE
