This invention relates to an apparatus and a method for comminuting and grinding material which is difficult to grind, in particular damp coal and organic substances, in one operation, to the ultimate fineness of the ground material. This takes place by means of rotating grinding rolls within a closed grinding drum on a grinding roller bed. By means of the special mounting of the grinding rolls in the housing and in the adjustable roll housing flanges, the problem of wedge formation and thus breaking of the grinding rolls is avoided in an inventive and advantageous manner.
