The one end of the crankshaft has a support plate (8) rotating with the crankshaft and with a damping mass (7) attached to the support plate via an elastic spacer block (10). The block includes a chamber which is linked to a variable pressure feed in order to counteract axial vibrations on the crankshaft. The oil feed to the pressure compensation chamber is via oil ducts through the centre of the crankshaft and fed via radial ducts to the oil galleries. The used oil is ducted to the sump. ADVANTAGE - Quieter running engine, no additional damping control required, self adjusts with engine speed.
