Lignocellulosic biomass is thoroughly mixed with an oil originating from the process, and a metal catalyst on a support material is added. The reaction conditions are maintained at a temperature of 300-400 DEG C and a hydrogen partial pressure of 35-250 bar. The reaction products are phase-separated in two stages to obtain the pasting oil, the nett product oil and a hydrogen-containing gas.
