The pH electrode which has a closed tubular glass housing has an annular chamber (8) which [lacuna] the reference electrolyte (18), the reference element (20), the diaphragm (26), the space (32) to receive a gas under pressure and a gas supply line (34) which can be closed gas-tight. The gas under pressure which is in the space (32) permits the pressure inside the chamber (8) which includes the reference electrode to be kept higher than the pressure of the measurement medium.
