The device includes: a frame 1 in which the axle 2 swivels; a bearing system 21 which includes a stationary element 22 connected to the frame and two movable elements 23, 24 which can pivot on the stationary element about a vertical axis O; two brackets 31, 45 solidly attached respectively to the said movable elements and connected to the adjacent ends 32, 46 of the two coaches; and a linkage mechanism 51 interposed between the stationary element and the two movable elements and adapted for keeping this stationary element in a position such that the axle is always in the vertical plane bisecting the dihedral angle formed by the longitudinal vertical planes of the two coaches. The invention is applicable to railway stock coach sets in which the adjacent ends of two coaches are supported by a common swivelling axle. IMAGE
