The breaking up of the crude fossil material is performed by air jet milling into its diatomaceous structure, while the drying, the purification to remove the inorganic impurities, the calcining and the cooling of the crude fossil material are performed by using the principle of the technique of treatment in a whirling layer; the agglomerates formed are broken up by means of air jet milling and the sorting of the fossil material is performed by means of spiral pneumatic screening apparatus; during the purification the quartz and clay fractions incorporated are removed by screening processes. Application to the field of filtration and of the manufacture of dyes, lacquers, fertilisers and the like.
