P A three-module memory system is described in which a data word of 2 ** i + 1 bits is stored. Half of the data word is stored in each of the two memory modules. A third memory module is provided in which each of the modules allows the storage of symbols of 2 ** i + 1 bits. An error protection code is described which, for five bit symbols, has a minimum distance profile of 4, 2, 0 and for nine or seventeen bit symbols, has a minimum distance profile of 6, 2, 0. A single-bit error can therefore be corrected, an error of a single symbol can be detected and up to four arbitrary bit errors can be detected.
