A depression and elevation control device for an electric fan has a twisted spring 51 which during elevation or depression is arranged such that forces in the spring always cause it to be moved towards the contracting direction of its diameter and thus provide a counter balance for the weight to the fan. The spring has end portions 51a, 51b one of which acts on the edge 47a of a cutaway in plate 47 surrounding the pivot and the other is either acted on by the spring stopping plate 48 or the neckpiece 9 respectively depending on the direction of movement.
