n-Hexyl alcohol cannot be completely removed from n-hexyl acetate- n- hexyl alcohol - water mixtures by distillation because of the presence of the minimum ternary azeotrope. n-Hexyl alcohol can be readily removed from mixtures containing it, n-hexyl acetate and water by using extractive distillation in which the extractive distillation agent is a benzoate or a mixture of benzoates with higher boiling organic compounds. Typical examples of effective agents are benzyl benzoate; methyl benzoate and adiponitrile; ethyl benzoate, benzyl benzoate and methyl salicylate.
