PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-density and high-strength titanium carbonitride ceramic material capable of being sintered at low temp. by adding a specified amt. of iron-group metal powder to the base mixture consisting of metal diboride powder or di-metal pentaboride powder forming a hexagonal system at high temp. and the balance titanium carbonitride. CONSTITUTION:The base mixture contg. 5-95wt% of =1 kind among the powder of metal diboride such as TiB2 and CrB2 or the powder of di-metal pentaboride such as W2B5 and Mo2B5 and the balance titanium carbonitride powder is prepared. One or more kinds among the carbide powder of TiC, Zr, etc., or their solid soln. are added to the base mixture to the extent of 0.1-50wt%, based on the total weight. One or more kinds among iron-group metals such as Co, Ni, and Fe are further added to the mixture to the extent of 0.1-5.0wt%, based on the total weight. The obtained mixture is sintered, and the desired titanium carbonitride ceramic material contg. a trace amt. of iron-group metals is obtained.
