PURPOSE:To steadily control the gas leakage from the gasifying zone to the dry distillation zone of a continuous vertical oven when dry distillation of oil shale is effected therein, by using specified control units to control the flow rate of the gas discharged from each of the gas circulating loops provided for these two steps. CONSTITUTION:In an oil shale dry distillation system in which a continuous vertical oven having a zone (A) for dry distillation of an oil shale and a zone (B) for gasification of the oil shale after dry distillation is used and a gas circulating system is provided for each of these steps, the following control units are used to control the flow rate of the gas discharged from each gas circulating system: (A) a control unit (gas composition controlling devices AC1, FC1, V1) which detects the composition of the gas in the gas circulating system of the dry distillation step, thereby controlling the flow rate of by-product gas discharged therefrom; (2) a control unit (FC3, FC2, V2) which detects the flow rate of the gas introduced into the gas circulating system of the gasifying step, thereby controlling the flow rate of the gas discharged therefrom; (3) a control unit (PrC1, PC1, V3) which detects the difference in gas pressure between the dry distillation zone and the gasifying zone, thereby controlling the flow rate of the discharged gas.
