PURPOSE:To produce a welding rod for high alloy steel with decreased stages for working while supressing the seizure of a die by packing adjusted metal powder, etc., into a sheath material consisting of ordinary steel or low alloy steel to form a composite material, subjecting the composite material to drawing and finishing the drawn material to a prescribed diameter. CONSTITUTION:The ordinary steel or low alloy steel having excellent workability is adopted as the sheath material 1 and at least one kind of the metal powder, alloy powder and/or nonmetal powder adjusted to be suitable for welding of the high alloy steel such as stainless steel is packed as the packing metal powder 2 into said material 1. The material is further subjected adequately to a plating treatment of Ni, etc., at the time of intermediate drawing or finishing, by which the rust formation thereof is prevented and the content of Ni, etc., is increased. Since the sheath material is the ordinary steel, there is no need for any special treatment stage at the time of drawing the composite material formed by packing the metal powder 2 into the material 1. The working stage is thus extremely facilitated.
