PURPOSE:To surely execute a recognizing processing after tracking a segment by tracking segment in respective peak directions by regarding black dots as a reference when the length distribution of continuous black dots has two peaks about 360 deg. periphery of each black dot. CONSTITUTION:Original image data are searched in an arrow direction by an image scanner to search the initial black dot 4. Then black dots continued in the direction of 360 deg. periphery of the dot 4 are counted up. As the result of the calculation, 360 deg. peripheral angle is set up on the horizontal axis and the counted number of black dots is set up on the vertical axis by the operation of a computer and an intermediate point 8 of a vector 7 in a theta0 direction whose counted value is the longest is selected as a new reference point. The number of black dots in the 360 deg. periphery of the intermediate point 8 is measured by the similar procedure to obtain a curve 9. Normal peak values 4P1, 4P2 are obtained on the curve 9 and then a segment is tracked in the theta1 and theta2 directions by regarding the intermediate point 8 as the succeeding starting point. Thus, the recognition processing after tracking the segment can be surely executed.
