PURPOSE:To enable the selection of a microorganism to meet desired specifications, by measuring specific spectrums of light to find conditions of products, metabolism, secretion and substrates of microorganisms cultured. CONSTITUTION:A measuring system 6 is provided with a spectrophotometric system 8 and a scanning mechanism which scans over a culture container 2 by a light beam from the system. The system 8 is equipped with a spectroscope and a detector. It 8 is also provided with a beam aperture to turn light from the spectroscope to a light beam. On the other hand, the detector detects reflected light, transmission light or fluorescence from the container 2. As the scanning mechanism of the system 6, for example, once moves the container 2 in the direction Y and the other moves the container in the direction X orthogonal to the direction Y to calculate the position of irradiating the light beam. A decision mechanism 10 receives input of information on absorbance or the like measured 6 and the position of irradiating light beam and transmits information on position of a colony to a retransplanting mechanism 14 when a measured value meet a set requirement on comparison with the shape or the like of the colony set 12.
