MANUFACTURE OF FORMING MATERIAL FROM RAPIDLY SOLIDIFIED ALUMINUM ALLOY POWDER

PURPOSE:To manufacture a forming material capable of providing sufficient strength by means of a sintering method, by applying substitution galvanizing to a rapidly solidified powder of an Al alloy having a specific composition containing Si, Cu, Mg, etc., and by subjecting the resulting powder to compacting, sintering, and then to forging. CONSTITUTION:An alloy consisting of 10-35% Si, 0.5-10% Cu, 0.3-6% Mg, and the balance Al or further containing one or more kinds among 0.3-9% Fe, 0.3-4% Mn, and 0.3-9% Ni or the one consisting of 10-35% Si, 0.3-9% Fe, 0.3-4% Mn, and the balance Al is used. A rapidly solidified powder of the above Al alloy is immersed in a caustic wash solution to undergo removal of oxide film on the powder-grain surface and then is dipped into a plating bath to undergo substitution galvanizing. Subsequently, this powder is washed, dried, and then compacted, which is sintered in an N2 atmosphere and forged, without delay, into the prescribed dimensions. In this way, the forming material having strength comparable with that of conventional forming material prepared by extruding method can be manufactured by means of a sintering method.
