The invention relates to a novel intermediate for cephalosporins. The intermediate has the formula IMAGE (syn isomer) where R1 is a lower alkyl group. The invention furthermore relates to a process for preparing the intermediate, with a compound of the formula IMAGE (syn isomer) where X is a halogen atom and R1 is the same as above, being caused to react with thiourea in the presence of a solvent.
