Process for preventing damage to and loss of efficiency in steam boilers by continuously monitoring the changes in the flue gas temperature and by controlling the operation of the boiler as a result of the change in temperature. The changes in flue gas temperature are monitored in the top flue pipe and the burner of the steam boiler is locked in the off position when the pre-set temperature is attained. As a result of the variation in flue gas temperature the trend in the pollution of the heated surfaces is ascertained and on the basis of this, the optimum moment for cleaning of the boiler is determined. Device for the process, in which the locking temperature sensor unit (2), designed for switching off the burner (9) of the steam boiler in the event of rapid variations in temperature, is installed in the top flue pipe (5) contiguous with the fire line of the steam boiler (1). The slow variations in flue gas temperature are monitored with the aid of a maximum thermometer (6) and the triggering temperature of the locking sensor unit (2) is correspondingly adjusted.
