Heteroarylethylamines of the formula (I) IMAGE in which R1 represents OH, acyloxy or alkoxy, R2 represents hydrogen or alkyl, R3 represents hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclyl, R2 and R3 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bound can represent a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic radical, R4 represents hydrogen, alkyl, halogen, haloalkyl, hydroxyl, cyano, alkoxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, mono- or dialkylaminocarbonyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy, haloalkylthio, NHSO2-alkyl, R5 represents hydrogen, hydroxyl, alkoxy or the radical -NR7R8, R6 represents the radicals given under R4, and their physiologically acceptable salts and their N-oxides are used as performance-enhancing agents in animals. The compounds of the formula I are used in animal breeding and animal feeding.
