1468587 Paper manufacture CALGON CORP 25 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973 16 July 1974] 41719/74 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] Water drainage is improved from a web obtained in the manufacture of paper by adding to a cellulosic pulp slurry an emulsion consisting of a polymer-containing water-inoil emulsion which has been made by polymerising water-soluble monomers in a waterin-oil emulsion containing at least 20% by wt. based on the wt. of the oil phase of the emulsion, of an emulsifier having an HLB (as defined) of at least 7, depositing the resulting mixture onto a forming surface and draining water from the mixture. The above emulsion can also be used to improve the retention of inorganic fillers in the processing of paper by adding it to 'an aqueous paper pulp suspension. Example 48 shows the use of the above emulsions as drainage aids and example 49 illustrates their use as pigment retention aids. In these Examples, emulsions containing polymers derived from acrylamide/dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, acrylamide/3-acrylamido-3-methyl butyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, and acrylamide /2 - acrylamido - 2 - methyl propyl sulphonic acid are used.
