The method includes leading the animal into the milking stall (2) before which milk samples are taken in a station through which the animal is led. At the station (3), the milking cups are attached to each udder in turn. The milk samples can be measured for their conductivity and/or the temp. and/or the colour and/or transparency and/or other characteristics. Depending on the sample examination, the animal is taken to one or other stall. A recognition system establishes which animal is present. The samples are taken at a different location to where the udders are cleaned.
