A cellulosic fibrous material comprises individualised, stiffened, curled, cellulosic fibres having (a) an average dry fibre twist count of at least 4.5 twist nodes per mm., (b) an average wet fibre twist count of at least 0.5 twist nodes per mm less than (a); and (c) an average water retention value of 28-50%. Also claimed are an absorbent structure incorporating a mass of the above fibres, and a disposable absorbent article having a liq. impervious back sheet, a liq. permeable top sheet connected to the back sheet and an absorbent core comprising the absorbent structure.
