The surgical instrument for placing linear staple sutures comprises a body (1) having a closed rectangular frame (2). Each of its lateral sides (30,31) are provided with a respective slot (45,46) located on the inner surface of the lateral side close to an adjacent side (3). The axis of the slot is parallel to each of the lateral sides. A die (4) is provided with recesses (4') and is secured on the side of the frame, extreme recesses (49,50) being arranged inside the slots in the lateral sides. A staple head (5) is accommodated in the body and is movable towards and away from the die. A detachable staple magazine (9) is received in the head and has staple slots (10) moved by the head towards the die to position the extreme slots (53,54) in the lateral sides of the frame. There is a staple ejector (11), and respective actuators (23,26) of the staple head and of the staple ejector.
