SPAR TYPE CONSUMABLE ELECTRODES FOR VACUUM ARC MELTING OF ZIRCONIUM OR TITANIUM ALLOYS

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThis is an electrode for consumable arc meltingof zirconium and titanium alloys containing a low meltingpoint alloy constituent. The electrode uses a low resis-tance spar extending substantially the length of theelectrode and being substantially free of any unalloyedlow melting point alloy constituent. The external membercontaining unalloyed low melting point constituent isattached to the spar member in a manner to provide arelatively high resistance through the external member inan axial direction of the electrode. During operation,this minimizes resistance heating of the external memberaway from the arc and thus premature melting of unalloyedlow melting point constituent is generally avoided.
