ABSTRACTThis invention provides an improved method and apparatusable to transmit and receive variable-rate telemetry data from5 Kbps to 1 Mbps through a standard fixed rate T1 communicationchannel. There is disclosed a method and apparatus for encoding,at a transmitting unit, a variable-rate continuous bit stream ofdata on a fixed rate digital service channel and a method andapparatus for decoding, at a receiving unit, data and bit rateinformation from the encoded signal in order to reproduce theoriginal bit stream and data rate entered in the transmittingunit.
