Abstract Of The DisclosureA novel method of determining the portion of agiven dairy cow feedstuff which is attributable tonon-structural carbohydrates is disclosed. Themethod includes the steps of analyticallydetermining the percentages of crude protein, lipidand ash in the dry matter concentration of a firstfeed sample, and in the neutral detergent fiberwhich has been separated from the soluble matter ofa second sample of the same feed, and subtractingthe amounts of crude protein, lipid and ash in theneutral detergent fiber from the respective amountsof the same substances in the original sample. Thethree difference figures are totaled and subtractedfrom the percentage of the second samplerepresented by neutral detergent solubles, i.e.,100 minus neutral detergent fiber, thereby providing anaccurate indication of the percentage ofnon-structural carbohydrate in the feedstuff. Themethod is applied to both forages and grains, andis employed in the formulation of dairy cow rationswherein ration is adjusted to optimize milkproduction, the preferred percentage being fromabout 30% to about 45% depending on forage type.-1-
