This invention provides Methylophilusviscogenes ATCC 534l2 and variants thereof as novel strains of facultative methylotrophic bacteria.; Methylophilus viscogenes strain ATCC 534l2 is capable of assimilating methanol via the ribulose monophosphate pathway to form extracellular heteropolysaccharide Poly 54 under aerobic cultivation conditions.
