In this process, an alkaloid-containing lupin extract and a protein- and fat-containing substance from which the alkaloids have been removed are obtained from the previously ground seed kernels by a stepwise separation process which has an extraction phase, is carried out at 5 to 15 DEG C with partial exclusion of air and using SO2, and which operates by the counterflow principle with aqueous, previously enriched extract solutions of decreasing concentration. After extraction, the lupin extract is fermented at a temperature of below 35 DEG C to 40 DEG C, under the action of air, during which process its pH rises by 0.2 to 0.5. The yield-increasing and growth-enhancing effect of the lupin extract on plants is substantially increased and the protein losses are substantially reduced.
