The protective helmet has a multi-part helmet shell consisting of two side parts (1), located opposite each other on both sides of the apex plane (5-5) of the helmet, and a central part (2) curving over the side parts (1) along the apex (5'). Provided between them in each case are free joints (6) which allow deformations, changing the curvature, of the central part (2) which can be bent elastically in the apex plane (5-5). The side parts (1) and the central part (2) are connected to one another by a tensioning means which extends in an annular fashion in a transverse plane (8-8) which is approximately perpendicular to the apex plane (5-5) and passes through the two end regions (2.1, 2.2) of the central part (2) and through both side parts (1).
