Process for the preparation of N-alkyl-N'-methylalkyleneureas, in particular N, N'-dimethylalkyleneureas. A preparation of these N, N'-dialkylalkyleneureas has hitherto been carried out only with great difficulty, e.g. B. from alkylene diol, alkylamine and CO2 or alkylene diamine and phosgene in only unsatisfactory yields. The N-alkyl-N '- (hydroxymethyl) alkyleneureas or N, N'-bis (hydroxymethyl) compounds of alkyleneurea and formaldehyde are converted into the N, N'-dialkylalkyleneureas using formic acid. Production of N-alkyl-N'-methylalkyleneureas, in particular N, N'-dimethylalkyleneureas, as a replacement for known carcinogenic solvents.
