A golf shoe sole has inserts for releasably securing gripping elements. Inserts on the front portion of the sole are arranged in two groups (17,20) along two lines (16,19) which are close to the edges of the sole and of which one line (19) approximately follow the contour of the inside edge of the sole and the other line (16) approximately follow the contour of the outside edge of the sole. The shank portion (7) of the sole is free from gripping elements. The group of inserts (24,25) associated with the outside edge of the sole (15) is limited to the region extending from the outside ball to the shank portion.
