The metal can has its perimeter wall (1) provided with two parallel circumferential tear lines (4) and a grip tongue (6) to permit opening the can along these lines. This tongue is welded to the perimeter wall with the weld line (5) overlapping (8) the tear lines (4). The thickness of the tongue is preferably greater than that of the wall. The weld may be a single point weld, two closely spaced point welds, three overlapping point welds in triangular formation, or a V-shaped weld with the point (7) facing the grip end of the tongue. USE/ADVANTAGE - Can with tongue for opening. The arrangement eliminates the problems experienced with a riveted tear tongue, i.e. doubtful seal during sterilisation, fracture at the rivet or incorrect tearing when opening, and inability to produce on modern can forming and welding machines. The present can is suitable for such machines.
