Calcium chloride prodn. - from hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate in lumps allowing removal of gas and solids with soln.

In CaCl2 prodn. by reacting HCl with CaCO3, the layer of lumps of CaCO3 forms at least the upper pt. of a gas- and liquid-permeable stationary bed, which extends into a constricted lower outlet below this bed, through which the gases and solids formed in the upper pt. of the bed are discharged by the stream of CaCl2 soln. The lumps of CaCO3 have a particle size of 2-100, pref. 4-15 mm and contain ca. 5% impurities. Appts. consists of a single vessel with upper inlets for lumps of CaCO3 and HCl, tapering to the outlet. The lower pt. of the vessel down to the outlet can be packed with corrosion-resistant filler supporting the lumps of CaCO3. ADVANTAGE - The process avoids undesirable blockages or accumulation of sludge in the appts.
