Vibration damping system for workpiece or tool - has low-rigidity member between component carrier and its camp support and fixed to carrier, and mass resiliently coupled to carrier
Vibration damping system for workpiece or tool - has low-rigidity member between component carrier and its camp support and fixed to carrier, and mass resiliently coupled to carrier
The system damps vibrations of a workpiece (1) or tool during machining. The component is clamped (3) at at least in one position on a fixed or on a movable support e.g. work support carriage (2) and coupled with a damping element (6), e.g. elastomer ring (8) and damping mass (7). It comprises a member (4) arranged between the clamping position (3) and the component (1) and secured to the component to form a composite unit therewith which has a lesser static rigidity than the component by itself. The component is additionally rigidly connected with a carrier (5) which is coupled with the damping element (6;7,8). USE/ADVANTAGE - Machining vibration damper; used with an examples described are turbine blade as workpiece, milling spindle with tool, and boring bar, to minimise tendency to chatter. Damping is usually applied in the area of an antinode which is practically impossible with a workpiece as it interferes with machining and with a tool the possibilities are limited due to lack of space. The system absorbs vibration energy without being arranged near an antinode.
