A high damping capacity light metal alloy consists of a Mg/1-2 wt.% Si alloy, pref. a Mg-Mg2Si eutectic alloy contg. 1.34 wt.% Si. Prodn. of the Mg-Si alloy involves melting appropriate amounts of Mg and Si at about 800 deg. C, cooling to about 650-700 deg. C, casting and then cooling to ambient temp.. USE/ADVANTAGE - The alloy is useful for mfr. of light mechanical construction elements subject to mechanical vibration, e.g. as a replacement for Mg-Zr alloys in the aircraft and aerospace industries, as a replacement for 'AZ-63' or 'AZ 91' alloys in the automobile industry, or for mfr. of machine tool parts or small light motor housings (e.g. for lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc.). The alloy has high damping capacity (Q-1 = 8 x 103 for Mg/1.34 % Si alloy), excellent corrosion resistance and a good combination of damping capacity and mechanical properties.
