For maintaining the humidity of the atmosphere inside a transport container or ventilated room, one or more porous capillary elements (1) are placed in the room, each saturated with a mixture of water and a watersoluble substance. Each element is enclosed by a waterproof plastics layer (2,3), but which allows water vapour to pass through in two directions. The porous body is of plastics, porous metal, natural porous material, paper, felt, fibrous, foam or sintered material. The water soluble substance is salt, a hydrate of salt, sugar or a mixture of sugars.
