A tank (9) is filled with an electrophoretic liq. (7) employed to coat workpieces (6) with lacquer. Each piece (6) is fixed to a cathode located near an anode; and several pairs of anodes and cathodes are each connected to separate d.c. power supplies. Each anode is employed to provide a corrosion protection current via a diode which is electrically connected to tank (9) and also to the negative pole of a d.c. supply. Parallel with each diode is a device (13) monitoring the reverse voltage of the diode, and connected to a visual display meter and/or to an alarm, i.e. the alarm is triggered if the diodes lose their barrier properties. Typically, each piece (6) is located on a cathode (14,24); and each cathode is connected with an anode (15,25) to a d.c. source (10,20). Each anode (15,25) is used to provide a protective current in the tank (9); this current flows from the tank walls via diodes (11,21) to the negative poles of the d.c. sources (10,20). Ammeter (8) indicates the protective current.
