Polyacrylamide is reacted with formaldehyde and bisulfite at a temperature of at least about 100 DEG C and preferably at an initial reaction mixture pH of less than about 12, preferably about 3 to about 8, to produce sulfomethylpolyacrylamide. Sulfomethylpolyacrylamide polymers are provided which have outstanding properties such as water treatment agents, drilling field dispersants and flocculents.
